Tonight, my wife and I took a walk along the canal in Indianapolis, IN. It is beautiful in
the evening when it gets dark. We saw lovely couples, families with children and dogs.
It only took us roughly 40 minutes to complete a full circle of 3 miles long. Along the
canal, we share the walkway with runners, cyclists, ducks and other birds. It is a great
walk, and 40 minutes went by so fast especially when we listen to music on our iPhone.
We wear our cell phone armband on our biceps and hold hands while we stroll along.
To the right of our apartment complex, there is Indiana University School of Medicine.
It starts on West 11th Street. This canal was built in 1836. The initial goal was to construct
296 miles water pathway. Three years after the project begun, Indiana went into
bankruptcy. In 1976, the Indianapolis Water Company deeded the canal from 11th
street to White River State Park. It is now considered to be the recreational hotspot
in Indianapolis for the local and tourists. There is a wide array of activities that you can
involve such as boat and bicycle riding, kayaking, renting Gondola as if you were in
Italy. My wife and I have been living in downtown Indianapolis since June 1st of this year.
We have not spent a dime on recreational activities as there is so much to do here. If you
are into museums and exhibits, there is USS Indianapolis Monument, the Congressional
Medal of Honor Memorial, and “We Will Never Forget” commemorating the September
11th. If walking three miles is physically challenging for you, you can rent a bike or do
Segway tour. My wife and I do the canal walk at least 3 times a week. That’s our
commitment to keep our heart strong. Until we are sick and tired of the same views,
we most likely maintain this schedule for a little while longer. Our next challenge will
be walking the Cultural Trail. For now, we try to enjoy the view of water, ducks and dogs.
Believe me, time flies when you wear your iPhone 5 armband, tune to your favorite
music and holding hand of your loved one. Three miles seem eternity when you are
alone, but it can be extremely short when you are with the right person.
